The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 tonight at Citi Field and improved their record to 54-46.
The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until RHP Tylor Megill singled with two outs in the bottom of the third and then CF Brandon Nimmo walked and 1B Pete Alonso singled to load the bases.
2B Jeff McNeil came up and hit a RBI single which extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
The bats went quiet for the next few innings until the bottom of the seventh after pinch-hitter Brandon Drury hit a solo homer Drury has now gone 6-6 this month as a pinch-hitter.
RHP Tylor Megill worked around a single by 1B Freddie Freeman in the first and got out of a jam in the top of the second after he gave up a couple of baserunners
Megill gave up a bloop single to 2B Ozzie Albies in the third, but then got Freeman to ground out and 3B Austin Riley to fly out to end the inning.
Megill had 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning and worked out a two-out walk by RF Joc Pederson in the top of the fifth to extend his scoreless streak to 17 innings.
Megill struck out Freeman to start the top of the sixth, but then gave up a solo homer to Riley and was taken out.
His final line was 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts. Megill has an ERA of 2.04 through his first seven starts which is the third best in franchise history behind Terry Leach and Nolan Ryan.
RHP Seth Lugo came in and retired SS Dansby Swanson on a ground-out and LF Abraham Almonte to end the inning.
RHP Trevor May followed with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning and picked up his fourth win.
LHP Aaron Loup came on in the top of the eighth and got into immediate trouble after he gave up back-to-back hits to Pederson and Almonte to start the inning.
Loup was able to get Freeman to ground back to the mound and was then taken out.
RHP Jeurys Familia then came in and struck out Riley and got Swanson to ground out to end the inning.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and gave up a ground-rule double to Almonte to lead off the inning and then retired CF Guillermo Heredia for the first out on a fly-out to shallow right field.
Diaz then gave up a base-hit to pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza to right field, but RF Michael Conforto made a perfect throw to throw Almonte out at the plate for the second out.
Diaz was able to close it out after he retired pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval on a line-out for the final out and picked up his 23th save.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Braves at 12:10 p.m.
