New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby tonight and put on a show for the fans in Cleveland. In the first round, Alonso beat hometown hero Cleveland Indian Carlos Santana hitting 14 homers to Santana's 13. In the second round against Brave and National League East star Ronald Acuna Jr, he hit 20 homers to beat Acuna's 19 homers. In the finals against fellow rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Guerrero hit 22 homers in the last round and didn't show any signs of fatigue after a long battle and swing off with Dodgers CF Joc Pederson. Alonso wasn't fazed and got on a roll and hit 23 homers in four minutes and didn't even need 30 extra seconds. He won the grand prize of one million dollars and will donate 10 % of his earning to charity. Alonso made nearly double his 2019 salary after winning the derby, since he makes $555,000 this year. He became the second Met to win the Home Run Derby after RF Darryl Strawberry won it in 1986. It was a fun and special night to watch Alonso and many other young sluggers battle it out and another great moment for him and Met fans in what has been a special rookie season. Alonso will be playing in the All-Star game tomorrow night alongside teammates Jeff McNeil and Jacob deGrom.
