Mets vs. Padres Game 100 Recap

Mets LHP Jason Vargas (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com)

The New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 tonight and improved their record to 46-54. 2B Robinson Cano led the way offensively with three homers and five RBI's. Cano singled in his first at-bat and hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and another two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Hopefully he can build off this performance and finish up strong the rest of the season.

LHP Jason Vargas was outstanding with six scoreless innings and didn't allow his first hit until the top of the fifth inning. Vargas kept the Padres off balanced all night with a sharp change-up that was effective against the righty-bats and mixed in a curveball and fastball as well. His final line was 6 innings, 1 hit, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 3.96. RHP Tyler Bashlor followed and retired his first two batters in the top of the seventh, but then gave up a single to catcher Franklin Meija and walked 2B Luis Urias and was taken out. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come in and retired pinch-hitter Wil Myers to end the inning. Gsellman stayed in for the top of the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off single to SS Fernando Tatis Jr, who stole second and CF Manuel Margot followed with an infield hit. He was able to settle down and got 3B Manny Machado to pop out, but was able to limit the damage to a run after only allowing a sacrifice fly to LF Hunter Renfroe, but stuck out RF Franmill Reyes to end the inning. LHP Justin Wilson came on in the top of the ninth inning and walked 1B Eric Hosmer and Meija and was then pulled. RHP Edwin Diaz had to come in and gave up a two-run double to Tatis, but was able to close it out and picked up his 22th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Padres at 7:10 p.m.
