The New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 39-47. The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings after wasting several scoring opportunities, but finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning after LF J.D. Davis hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the eighth, 1B Pete Alonso led off and got on base after 3B D.J. LeMahieu made a throwing error. J.D. Davis followed with a RBI double to score Alonso to tie it it up. 2B Robinson Cano was walked intentionally and catcher Wilson Ramos hit a single to load the bases. RF Michael Conforto came through after a difficult night at the plate with a two-run double.

RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. Wheeler gave up back-to-back singles to SS Didi Gregarious and 1B Edwin Encarnacion and then an RBI single to 2B Glyeber Torres. LF Brett Gardner grounded into a force-out, but LHP James Paxton bunted a run home after Wheeler and Ramos both went for the ball and neither one covered home. He settled down after that with 1-2-3 innings in the top of the third and fourth innings. Wheeler worked around a single by Gardner in the top of the fifth and a double by CF Aaron Hicks in the top of the sixth and didn't allow any runs. He stayed in for one batter in the top of the sixth and struck out Torres and was then taken out. His final line was 6.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts. LHP Justin Wilson came in next for the first time since April after returning from the IL today and retired the only two batters he faced. RHP Seth Lugo followed with a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning and picked up his fourth win. RHP Edwin came on in the top of the ninth to close it out and gave up an infield hit to SS Didi Gregarious to lead off the ninth inning, but came back to strike out Encarnacion and got Torres to fly out to center. Gregarious stole second, but Diaz struck out Gardner to end the game and he picked up his 19th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Yankees at 7:10 p.m.
