Mets vs. Giants Game 96 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 last night in 16  innings in a hearbreaking loss to snap their four game losing streak and dropped their record to 44-52. In the top of the first inning, RF Jeff McNeil led off with a double, LF J.D. Davis singled and 1B Pete Alonso drove in the first run of the game after he grounded into a double play. After that the offense was shut down by Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner and weren't able to generate any more runs. Bumgarner came out after nine inning, and in the top of the tenth inning, LHP Will Smith came in and 2B Robinson hit a lead-off single and SS Amed Rosario doubled. Catcher Tomas Nido struck out, and catcher Wilson Ramos was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto had a chance to come to through, but struck out as well as McNeil to end the inning. The bats went quiet after the inning and didn't generate another scoring chance until the 13th after Conforto and Davis singled with two outs, but Alonso flew out to end the inning. In the top of the 14th, LHP Steven Matz had to pinch hit after they ran out of bench players and struck out. In the top of the 15th, Nido walked to lead off the inning and Conforto singled with one out, but McNeil grounded into a force out and Davis popped out to end the threat. In the top of the 16th, Alonso led off with a solo homer for his 32th homer of the year.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd started out well with three scoreless innings, but gave up three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth inning and gave up a sacrifice fly to CF Kevin Pillar, but was able to limit the damage to one run. Syndegarrd settled down after that with easy innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning, and escaped out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh after allowing a lead-off triple and go 1B Brandon Belt to fly out to end the inning and was taken out after the inning. His final line was 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. LHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning with two strikeouts. LHP Luis Avilan threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless bottom of the eleventh inning. RHP Robert Gselman threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the 12th and 13th innings. LHP Justin Wilson threw a scoreless bottom of the 14th innings. RHP Chris Mazza threw a scoreless bottom of the 15th inning,but gave up back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the 16th and wound up loading the bases and gave up a walk-off single to 2B Donovan Solando.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Giants at 10:15 p.m.
