The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 to lose two of three games in the series and dropped their record to 40-50. RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult first inning allowing four runs due to his fastball having decreased velocity than in his previous starts.Wheeler gave up a RBI double to 1B Rhys Hoskins and then catcher J.T. Realmuto followed with a two-run double. LF Jay Bruce came up next and hit an RBI single. Wheeler settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the second, third, fourth and fifth inning. He went into a nice groove and one point retired 10 hitters in a row. Wheeler came back out for the top of the sixth inning after throwing 93 pitches and walked the lead-off hitter and then gave up a two-run homer to Bruce and was then taken out. His final line was 5 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a scoreless top of the sixth inning. RHP Wilmer Font followed and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. Font stayed in for the top of the eighth and gave up a solo homer to Bruce, his second of the game and a single to 2B Cesar Hernandez, but retired the next three hitters he faced. He gave up a solo homer to Hoskins in the top of the ninth.
The offense was held scoreless against Phillies ace starter RHP Aaron Nola for the first five innings until the bottom of the sixth. RF All-Star Jeff McNeil reached on an error and 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer. It was Alonso's 30th homer of the year and the second player in team history to have 30 homers before the All-Star break. The bats went quiet after that until the bottom of the ninth inning pinch-hitter Adeiny Hechavarria hit a solo homer.
The Mets are off this week for the All-Star break and return to action on Friday, July 12th at the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m. RHP Jacob deGrom, IF/OF Jeff McNeil and 1B Pete Alonso will be representing the team for the National League in the All-Star game. Alonso will also be participating in the Home Run Derby tomorrow night.
