The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 8-4 tonight in their first game back after the All-Star game and dropped their record to 40-51. LHP Jason Vargas started out well with two scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning. Vargas gave up a single to Marlins starter LHP Caleb Smith, but was distracted by Smith at first base for some reason and threw over at first several times. He then gave up a single to lead-off hitter SS Mel Rojas and then a three-run homer to LF Curtis Granderson. 1B Garrett Cooper followed with a solo homer. Vargas gave up more runs to Cooper after he hit a RBI double. His final line was six runs, five hits, one walk, and one strikeout in five innings. RHP Robert Gsellman gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth. RHP Chris Mazza gave up a run in 1.2 innings.
The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the top of the third inning after catcher Wilson Ramos hit a two-run single with the based loaded. After that the bats went quiet until the top of the ninth inning after 3B Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night at 6:10 p.m. against the Marlins.
