The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 49-55. LHP Steven Matz had an outstanding performance and threw the best outing of his career. Matz threw a complete-game shutout (first of his career) and allowing five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts on 99 pitches. He picked up his sixth win and lowered his ERA to 4.32. Matz was efficient all night and managed to keep pitch count down. He showed composure and posed and didn't get rattled with men on base and had a sharp curve-ball and change-up to the right-handed hitters. Matz has looked much better since working out of the bullpen before the All-Star break and will hopefully continue this run of success going forward.
The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings against Pirates starter RHP Trevor Williams until the bottom of the sixth inning after CF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the seventh inning, 3B Todd Frazier hit a pop-out single and LF J.D. Davis followed with a two-run homer.
The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the Pirates at 1:10 p.m.
