Sandy Alderson told the NY Times yesterday that the Mets have strong minor league pitching depth and the ability to make an impactful trade this summer.
Sandy Alderson's opening day payroll was $89 million dollars, significantly low for a New York based team. Sandy added, "We have the authority to go higher if it's necessary at the trade deadline."
As the Mets keep playing over .500 baseball, us baseball fans can't help but look ahead and ask how the Mets can get themselves better and try for a playoff run. Sandy's statements couldn't have come at a better time, when the team has been winning and looking ahead. The way I see it, Sandy has said a lot of things over his time here and New York regarding payroll flexibility, but the Mets opened the season in the bottom of the league payroll wise.
There's no doubt that the Mets have a ton of minor, and major league pitching. I've posted on this blog before that next year's starting five may be totally different from this years. Every current Mets starter is under contract for next season, and the Mets hope to add Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, and Rafael Montero in 2015. Where does that leave Gee, Neise, Colon, Mejia, and others?
Looking ahead at the summer trade deadline, I'm not quite sure exactly who will be available. I say, if Sandy is able to add payroll, then go spend it on Stephen Drew. Ruben Tejada hasn't given the Mets a single prayer that he can be the starting short stop over the long haul. Trade wise, it would be ideal for the Mets to go after a big outfield bat such as Carlos Gonzales, Giancarlo Stanton, and others. Is it worth dealing two young starters for an impactful hitter? Tough question, and one that Sandy Alderson's legacy may rest on.
