Last night, The Mets (19-20) lost to the Yankees (20-19) by the score of 4-0. Tanaka blanked the Mets' offense through 9 complete innings.
Rafael Montero was good--not great in his major league debut. As advertised, he threw a lot of strikes, but had trouble putting the Yankee batters away. Had Eric Young decided to not dive in the 2nd inning, which resulted in the first Yankee run, Montero may have given up one less run. Nevertheless, he needed 108 pitches to get through three innings. A few solo home runs put the Yankees up by double digits, and against Tanaka, Montero had no chance. In any event, the Mets and Mets fans were overall pleased with Montero's debut.
After last night's game, Kyle Farnsworth was released by the Mets--for the second time this season. If you remember last, Farnsworth nearly blew the save Monday night against the Yankees, if not for Texiera's lack of base running and Lucas Duda's fine diving catch. The move saves the Mets $750,000 but I'm not sure Kyle deserved a spot on this team anymore, even if he was free.
Tonight, Jacob deGrom, the Mets' third pitching prospect, makes his major league debut against Chase Whittley, making his major league debut as well for the Yankees. The reason to start deGrom came after ace Dillon Gee went to the DL with a lat strain. GM Sandy Alderson hopes to have Gee back within two weeks. deGrom was 4-0 with a 2.58 ERA in Triple-A Las Vegas.
