The Mets have announced that SS Omar Quintanilla has been designated for assignment.
The Mets also announced via twitter that his successor will come internally. This ends any speculation as to whether the Mets would sign free agent short stop Stephen Drew.
The likely option will be Wilmer Flores, who the Mets saw a lot of last summer. Flores had been auditioning at shortstop this spring. As for Quintanilla, he was 6-for-29 this season with three RBI in 15 games for New York.
Of all the people to be sent down, I didn't think think it would be Omar. I realize Quintanilla is not an offense player, but neither is the starting shortstop Ruben Tejada. All I heard in spring training was that scouts do not like Wilmer Flores at shortstop. He's too big. Flores profiles at more of a third or first baseman. So far this season in Triple-A, Flores has not done anything to stand out in the organizations mind. A recent twitter post stated the Mets are not optimistic he can be the team's every day shortstop. An interesting move indeed, and one we will have further coverage on.
