Mets Lose to Guardians 7-6 After Late Inning Rally Falls Short

The New York Mets lost to the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 tonight at Progressive Field for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 21-27.

RHP Adrian Houser started out well with two scoreless innings, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the third on RBI doubles by SS Bryan Rocchio, CF Tyler Freeman and 3B Jose Ramirez.

Houser gave up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run homer by Ramirez and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was five innings, six hits, six runs, one walk and four strikeouts.

LHP Jake Diekman came in next in the bottom of the sixth and gave up a run.

RHP Jorge Lopez followed with 1.1 scoreless innings.

RHP Sean Reid-Foley threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first four innings, but then came alive in the top of the fifth after 3B Mark Vientos hit a solo homer and then 2B Jeff McNeil followed with a double,

Catcher Tomas Nido and SS Francisco Lindor then hit singles to bring in another run.

In the top of the sixth, McNeil came through once again with a two-run homer.

In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter D.J. Stewart was hit by a pitch and then RF Starling Marte followed with a two-run homer.

In the top of the ninth, Lindor singled with one out, but then 1B Pete Alonso grounded into a double play to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, May 22 at the Guardians at 1:10 p.m.
