Mets Beat Nationals 8-2 After Offense Breaks Out

The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 8-2 this afternoon at Nationals Park in the second game of a doubleheader and improved their record to 20-21.

The Met offense did not do much for the first four innings against RHP Jake Irwin, but came alive in the top of the fifth.

RF Starling Marte led off with a single and LF Mark Canha followed with a RBI double.

CF Tommy Pham then walked and two batters DH Brandon Nimmo came through with a RBI single.

Two batters later, SS Francisco Lindor drove in Pham with a RBI single.

1B Pete Alonso was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

3B Brett Baty came up next and drew a walk which helped bring in another run.

Marte followed and broke the game open with a two-run single. 

Canha came up next and capped off the inning with a two-run single.

RHP Max Scherzer had a quality start allowing one run on two hits in five innings.

He gave up two walks with six strikeouts.

Scherzer picked up his third win.

LHP Brooks Raley came in next and ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth after he loaded the bases due to three walks, but he was able to get out of the inning without allowing any runs.

RHP Jeff Brigham followed and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

RHP Zach Muckenhirn came in next in the bottom of the eighth and gave up a RBI single to SS CJ Abrams.

Muckenhirn stayed in for the bottom of the ninth and closed it out with a scoreless inning.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Monday, May 15 at the Nationals at 4:05 p.m.
