The New York Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians 2-1 tonight at Citi Field to sweep the day-night doubleheader and their fifth consecutive win overall to improve their record to 25-23.

RHP Justin Verlander got off to a tough start in the top of the first inning after he gave up a solo homer to 3B Jose Ramirez but settled down after that.

Verlander had a stellar outing allowing one run on three hits in eight innings.

He gave up no walks and had five strikeouts.

Verlander was able to the Guardians off balanced all night with his fastball topping out between 92-95 mph along with his curveball, change-up and slider.

It was the best outing by a Mets starting pitcher this season as well as the deepest any starter has gone this year.

Verlander gave the bullpen a much needed rest after they have been taxed the last few games with some much needed length.

Verlander picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 3.60.

LHP Brooks Raley came on in the top of the ninth and closed it out after he got Ramirez to ground into a double play and picked up his first save of the season.

The offense did not do much for the five innings against Guardians ace RHP Shane Bieber until the bottom of the sixth after SS Francisco Lindor hit a game-tying solo homer.

In the bottom of the eighth, catcher Francisco Alvarez led off with a single and two batters later, Lindor singled which allowed pinch-runner Starling Marte to advance to third.

2B Jeff McNeil followed and drove in Marte with a game-winning sacrifice fly.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, May 23th at the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field at 7:40 p.m.
