Mets Beat Guardians 5-4 in Game 1 of Doubleheader Powered By Marte

The New York Mets beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-4 this afternoon at Citi Field in the first game of a doubleheader for their fourth consecutive win and improved their record to 24-23.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first three innings until the bottom of the fourth after DH Daniel Vogelbach walked, catcher Gary Sanchez singled and then 2B Eduardo Escobar drove in Vogelbach with a RBI single.

In the bottom of the sixth, 1B Pete Alonso and 3B Brett Baty singled to start the innings and two batters later Vogelbach walked to load the bases.

Sanchez came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to score Alonso.

In the bottom of the seventh, CF Nimmo led off with a towering solo homer that went 442 feet.

In the bottom of the eighth, Baty led off with a walk and RF Starling Marte came through with a much-needed game-winning two-run homer.

RHP Max Scherzer had a stellar outing with six scoreless innings allowing three hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Scherzer lowered his ERA to 4.01 and now has allowed one run and five hits over 11 innings in his last two starts.

LHP Brooks Raley followed with a scoreless top of the seventh.

RHP Adam Ottavino came in next in the top of the eighth and had a difficult outing allowing two runs on three hits and recorded only two outs before being taken out.

RHP David Robertson appeared next in the inning and gave up a two-run homer to 3B Jose Ramirez.

Robertson was able to respond and rebound in the top of the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning and picked up his second win.

The Mets have another game tonight against the Guardians at 7:10 p.m. on ESPN"s Sunday Night Baseball.
