The New York Mets beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 this afternoon at Citi Field for their second consecutive win to take two out of three games in the series to improve their record to 84-48 and also won the season series 5-3.

In the bottom of the first, RF Starling Marte and 1B Pete Alonso walked and then SS Francisco Lindor singled to load the bases.

LF Mark Canha walked with two outs to bring in the first run of the game.

The offense did not much in the next four innings against LHP Clayton Kershaw, but came alive in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Chris Martin after Marte led off with an infield single and then Lindor followed with a RBI double to tie the game.

1B Pete Alonso then struck out, but Lindor was able to steal third base.

DH Darin Ruf followed and came through with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the seventh, catcher James McCann doubled with two outs and then CF Brandon Nimmo came through with a RBI double.

Marte followed and capped off his stellar day at the plate with a RBI single.

RHP Chris Bassitt had a scoreless top of the first, but then ran into trouble in the top of the second and he gave up a double, single and walk to load the bases.

Bassitt then gave up a two-run single to LF Chris Taylor, but did not allow any more runs in the inning.

Bassitt settled down after that and threw scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

His final line was six innings, six hits, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

He picked up his 12th win.

RHP Trevor May followed with a scoreless top of the seventh.

RHP Edwin Diaz came in next in the top of the eighth and got into trouble after he gave up a hit and walk.

Diaz recovered to retire the next three hitters he faced and gave up a sacrifice fly to 3B Justin Turner, but then came back to strike out 2B Gavin Lux on a blazing fastball at 102.8 mph which was the hardest pitch of his career to end the inning.

RHP Adam Ottavino closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth and picked up his third save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday September 2nd at home against the Washington Nationals at 7:10 p.m.
