RHP Carlos Carrasco got into immediate trouble in the top of the first after he hit SS Miguel Rojas with one out and then gave up singles to RF Brian Anderson and DH Garrett Cooper to load the bases.
Carrasco then gave up a sacrifice fly to CF Bryan De La Cruz and later in the inning threw a wild pitch to bring in the second run of the inning.
Carrasco did not allow any more runs in the inning and worked out of a based loaded jam in the top of the second inning.
He ran into trouble once again in the top of the third after he gave up a one-out double to De La Cruz and a two-run homer to the following hitter to LF JJ Bleday and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was three innings, six hits, four runs, one walk and two strikeouts.
RHP Trevor Williams came in next and had a scoreless top of the fourth, but struggled in the top of the fifth.
Williams gave up a lead-off double to Anderson and then hit Cooper.
Two batters later Williams gave up a single to Bleday to load the bases and then allowed a two-run single to catcher Jacob Stallings and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was two innings, three hits, two runs and two strikeouts.
LHP David Peterson followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the sixth and seventh.
RHP Tylor Megill came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and had another dominating outing striking out three.
The offense did not much for the first three innings against RHP Pablo Lopez, but came alive in the bottom of the fourth after CF Brandon Nimmo and SS Francisco Lindor singled and two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso came through with a three-run homer for his 40th homer of the year and 131 RBI.
Alonso is the first Met to have multiple 40 homer seasons.
In the bottom of the eighth, 2B Jeff McNeil singled with two outs and then in a bizarre twist, reliever LHP Richard Bleier committed three balks which allowed McNeil to advance three bases and come around to score.
The bats did not do much all night and went 1-2 with runners in scoring position leaving five runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, September 28th at home against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
