The New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 tonight at American Family Field for their fifth consecutive win and improved their record to 94-55 and clinched their first trip to the playoffs since 2016.

The offense did not do much for the first three innings against RHP Corbin Burnes, but came alive in the top of the fourth after SS Francisco Lindor and 2B Jeff McNeil singled with out out.

1B Pete Alonso came up next and crushed a three-run homer for his 36th homer of the year and 118 RBI.

In the top of the sixth, CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a triple and Lindor followed with a RBI triple.

Three batters later, DH Daniel Vogelbach hit a RBI double to score Lindor.

After a scoreless top of the seventh, Alonso led off with a walk and then stole second.

Three batters later, RF Tyler Naquin drove in Alonso with a RBI single and reached second on a throwing error by CF Garrett Mitchell.

3B Eduardo Escobar followed with an intentional walk and then catcher Tomas Nido capped out the scoring in the run with a RBI single.

RHP Max Scherzer had a dominating performance with six perfect innings retiring all 18 hitters he faced with nine strikeouts on 68 pitches (47 strikes).

He was in complete command all night with his fastball, change-up, curveball and slider.

Scherzer showed one of he is one of the best pitchers in the game and why he was brought here in the offseason.

He picked up his 10th win and lowered his ERA to 2.15.

Scherzer also achieved a personal milestone with his 200th career win.

RHP Tylor Megill came in next in the bottom of the seventh in his first appearance since coming off the 60-day injured list with a shoulder injury.

Megill was rusty in his first time out after a long layoff and he gave up a lead-off double to LF Christian Yelich and two batters later, a two-run homer to 1B Rowdy Tellez.

Megill was able to settle down after that and retired the next two hitters he faced to end the inning.

RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Adam Ottavino closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 20 at the Brewers at 7:40 p.m.
