The New York Mets announced last night that they are calling up top prospect catcher Francisco Alvarez for the biggest series of the year at the Atlanta Braves.
Alvarez is ranked as the #1 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline.
He will be getting at-bats as a designated hitter against left handed pitching and the Mets are scheduled to face Braves LHP Max Fried on Friday night.
Alvarez started the year at Double-A Binghamton and dominated with 19 homers and an average of .277.
He has struggled since being promoted to Triple-A Syracuse with an average of .234, but in September he has started to heat up with an 1,079 OPS and reached base in his last 12 games.
Alvarez is the third Met top prospect to be called up this year along with Brett Baty and Mark Vientos.
He is not on the 40-man roster and there will need to be a corresponding roster move to active Alavrez on the roster.
