Mets Rout Nationals 19-5 Behind 9 RBI from Nimmo

The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 19-5 this afternoon at Nationals Park to split their four-game series and improved their record to 20-9.

After a scoreless top of the first, 3B Mark Vientos singled with one out in the top of the second and then LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single.

Catcher Francisco Alvarez then drove in Vientos with a RBI double and CF Jeff McNeil followed with a sacrifice fly to Nimmo.

After scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth, McNeil led off the top of the fifth with a homer.

In the top of the sixth, DH Jesse Winker walked with one out and then Vientos followed with a walk.

Nimmo came up next and broke the game open with a three-run homer.

In the top of the seventh, SS Francisco Lindor led off with a hit by pitch and then RF Juan Soto followed with a double.

1B Pete Alonso then drove in Lindor with a RBI single and Winker followed with a walk.

Two batters later, Nimmo came up and delivered once with a grand slam.

In the top of the eighth, Alonso led off with an infield hit and Winker singled and Vientos walked to load the bases.

Nimmo came up next and capped off his stellar day with the plate with a two-run double for his eighth and ninth RBI.

Two batters later, McNeil drove in Vienos with a RBI ground-out and then 2B Luisangel Acuna drove in Nimmo with a RBI single.

In the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Jose Azocar led off with an infield hit and Alonso followed with a walk.

Winker then drove in Azocar with a RBI single and Vientos then put the exclamation point on all of the scoring with a three-run homer.

RHP Griffin Canning had an outstanding outing with five scoreless innings.

Canning gave up four hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

He picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 2.61.

RHP Max Kranick came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth.

RHP Jose Urena followed and had a rough outing allowing five runs on seven hits in three innings. 

Urena gave up one walk with three strikeouts.

He still managed to pick up the save, since he pitched the last three innings of the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday, April 29 back at home at Citi Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 7:10 p.m.
