Mets Hang On To Beat Athletics 7-6 Powered By Alonso

The New York Mets beat the Athletics 7-6 tonight at Sutter Health Park and improved their record to 9-4.

After a scoreless top of the first, LF Brandon Nimmo homered to lead off the top of the second and two batters later, 2B Luisamgel Acuna doubled and then catcher Luis Torrens followed with a single.

After scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth, RF Juan Soto singled to lead off the top of the fifth and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a RBI double.

In the top of the sixth, CF Jose Siri walked with one out and then SS Francisco Lindor reached on an error.

Soto then walked to load the bases and Alonso drove in a run with a sacrifice run.

DH Starling Marte came up next and delivered a key two-run double.

In the top of the eighth, Alonso drove in a much needed insurance run with a solo homer.

RHP Griffin Canning started out well with one run through five innings, but then ran out of gas in the bottom of the sixth.

Canning allowed three more runs and was taken out with one out.

His final line was 5.1 innings, seven hits, four runs, three walks and three strikeouts.

Canning picked up his first win.

RHP Reed Garrett came in next and picked up the last two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

RHP Ryne Stanek threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh.

LHP A.J. Minter threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth.

RHP Edwin Diaz had a rocky bottom of the ninth allowing two runs on one hit with two walks, but managed to pick up the last three outs and pick up his third save of the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 12 at the Athletics at 4:05 p.m.
