The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 tonight at Citi Field for their second consecutive win and improved their record to over .500 at 46-45.

The Mets offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after LF Brandon Nimmo hit a solo homer.

The offense did not do much for the next four innings including wasting a based loaded opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, but then came alive in the bottom of the sixth.

D.H. J.D Martinez led off with a single and then 1B Pete Alonso followed with a single which advanced Martinez to third.

3B Mark Vientos came up next and drove in tying run with a RBI double and catcher Francisco Alvarez walked to load the bases.

2B Jose Iglesias then drove in a two-run single to score Alonso and Vientos.

RF Tyrone Taylor followed with a single and then CF Harrison Bader grounded into a fielder's choice and Iglesias scored on a throwing error by 2B Luis Garcia Jr.

In the bottom of the eighth, Vientos led off with a walk and two batters later, Iglesias doubled.

Taylor then broke the game open with a RBI triple.

RHP Luis Severino started out well with three scoreless innings and in the top of the fourth, gave up a two-run single to 1B Juan Yepez that was helped out by an error from Taylor and Severino also failed to cover home which led to two runs.

Severino was able to settle down with scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth and got one out in the top of the seventh and was then taken out.

His final line was 6.1 innings, four hits, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts.

He picked up his sixth win.

LHP Jake Diekman followed and struck out SS C.J. Abrams and LF James Wood to end the inning.

LHP Danny Young came in next in the top of the eighth and got the first two outs in the inning.

RHP Jose Butto came on and picked up the last four outs of the game with two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Thursday, July 11 at 1:10 p.m.
