The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third after CF Tyrone Taylor walked with one out and then two batters later SS Francisco Lindor continued his torrid stretch with a two-run homer.
Lindor has a 10-game hitting streak and has hit five homers with 10 RBI over his last four games.
The offense did not do much for the next six innings until the bottom of the tenth after 1B Pete Alonso was intentionally walked with one out and then two batters later, 2B Jeff McNeil hit a flyball down the right field line, but RF Ramon Laureano overran it and it fell it in for a single.
RHP Luis Severino had a scoreless top of the first and then gave up a RBI single to SS Orlando Arcia in the top of the second.
Severino was able to settle down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth and fifth.
Severino came back out for the top of the sixth and got into immediate trouble after he walked DH Marcell Ozuna and then gave up a single to catcher Travis d'Arnaud and a RBI single to 1B Matt Olsen to tie the game and was then taken out.
His final line was 5.0 innings, seven hits, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts.
RHP Jose Butto came in next and retired the next three hitters he faced with two strikeouts and a flyout.
Butto stayed in and retired the next six hitters he faced with a dominating performance of three perfect innings with four strikeouts.
RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and was helped out by his defense after catcher Francisco Alvarez threw out pinch-hitter Whitt Merrifeld trying to steal third.
RHP Phil Maton came on in the top of the tenth and was aided by a botched suicide squeeze attempt to threw a scoreless inning and pick up his second win.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday, July 26 at home against the Braves at 7:10 p.m.
