Mets Beat Braves 8-4 Behind Seven-Run Third

The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-4 tonight at Citi Field for their fifth consecutive win and improved their record to 55-48. 

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings against RHP Charlie Morton, but then came alive in the bottom of the third.

CF Tyrone Taylor led off by reaching on an error and then SS Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch.

LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a walk and DH J.D. Martinez came up next and hit a grand slam.

Two batters later, RF Jeff McNeil doubled and 3B Mark Vientos followed with a two-run homer.

Two batters catchers, catcher Francisco Alvarez hit a solo homer.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nimmo walked with one out and Martinez followed with a single.

Alonso then walked to the bases and two batters later Vientos drove in his third RBI of the game with a walk.

RHP Kodai Senga made his 2024 debut and had a scoreless top of the first and then gave up a two-run homer to RF Adam Duvall in the top of the second.

Senga was able to settle down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the top of the sixth with one out, Senga came off the mound and then fell down and grabbed his left calf and winced in paint moving out of the way for Alonso to catch a pop-up.

Fortunately, Senga was able to walk off of his own and after the game, it was revealed that he has a left calf strain.

His final line was 5.1 innings, two hits, two runs, one walk and nine strikeouts.

He picked up his first win.

RHP Eric Orze came in next and gave up a solo homer to DH Marcell Ozuna in the top of the sixth.

Orze came back out for the top of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning.

RHP Adam Ottavino threw a scoreless top of the eighth. 

LHP Jake Diekman gave up a solo homer to Duvall in the top of the ninth, but was able to get the last three outs.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, July 27 at home against the Braves at 4:10 p.m.
