Mets Sweep Nationals 9-1 Behind Torrens and Severino

The New York beat the Washington Nationals 9-1 this afternoon at Nationals Park for their third consecutive win to sweep their three-game series and improved their record to 27-35.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until catcher Luis Torrens hit a solo homer in the top of the third.

In the top of the fifth, RF Tyrone Taylor tripled with one out and then CF Harrison Bader followed with a sacrifice fly.

In the top of the sixth, Torrens led off the inning with another solo homer and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a solo homer.

1B Pete Alonso followed with a double and then two batters later, DH J.D. Martinez singled.

3B Mark Vientos followed with a RBI single to bring in Alonso and then two batters later, Bader broke the game open with a two-run double.

2B Jose Iglesias then hit a RBI single.

In the top of the seventh, Lindor led off with a single and then Alonso followed with a walk.

LF Brandon Nimmo was then hit by a pitch to load the bases and Martinez grounded into a double play to bring in a run.

RHP Luis Severino had a stellar start allowing one run on seven hits in eight innings.

He gave up no walks with four strikeouts.

Severino picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 3.25

LHP Danny Young closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.

The Mets are off for the next two days and return back to action on Saturday, June 8 against the Philadelphia Phillies in London for the third year of the London Series at London Stadium beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET.
