Mets Hang Out To Beat Yankees 9-7 Powered By Four Homers

The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 9-7 tonight at Citi Field for the first game of the Subway Series and improved their record to 38-39.

The Met offense got on the board in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a double and then LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a walk.

Two batters later, 1B Pete Alonso walked and then catcher Francisco Alvarez walked to load the bases.

RF Tyrone Taylor followed with a RBI single to score Lindor, but Alonso was thrown out at the plate.

In the bottom of the second, 3B Mark Vientos led off with a homer and two batters later, CF Harrison Bader hit a solo homer of his own.

In the bottom of the fourth, Vientos led off with another homer and then 2B Jeff McNeil followed with a single.

Three batters later, Nimmo delivered with a two-run homer.

In the bottom of the sixth, McNeil led off with a single and stole second and then Bader followed with a single.

Two batters later, Nimmo reached on an error by 2B Gleyber Torres which allowed McNeil to score.

D.H. J.D. Martinez followed with a RBI double and then Alonso drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

LHP David Peterson worked out of his way out of a bases loaded no-out jam in the top of the first not allowing any runs and settled down after that.

Peterson threw three scoreless innings in the top of the second, third and fourth and then gave up a solo homer to RF Juan Soto in the top of the fifth and was taken out in the middle of the inning.

His final line was 4.1 innings, three hits, one run, five walks and eight strikeouts.

RHP Dedniel Nunez followed and was able to get a double play to end the inning.

Nunez stayed in for the top of the sixth and threw a scoreless inning.

Nunez came back out for the top of the seventh and gave up a RBI double to CF Aaron Judge, but then came back to get the last two outs in the inning and came out.

Nunez's final line was 2.2 innings, one hit, one run, and two strikeouts.

He picked up his first win.

RHP Adam Ottavino came on in the top of the eighth and gave up a lead-off single and walk and was then taken out.

LHP Danny Young followed and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Austin Wells and two batters later walked Soto to load the bases and was taken out.

RHP Reed Garrett came on and gave up a grand slam to Judge and then came back to retire 2B Gleyber Torres on a ground-out to end the inning.

Garrett stayed in for the top of the ninth and had a 1-2-3 inning to close out the victory.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 26 at home against the Yankees at 7:10 p.m.
