The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees 8-7 tonight at Citi Field in the first game of the Subway Series and dropped their record to 31-36.

RHP Max Scherzer got off to a tough start in the top of the first after he gave up a solo homer to DH Giancarlo Stanton.

Scherzer had scoreless innings in the top of the second and third, however it all fell apart for him in the top of the fourth.

He gave up five earned runs in the inning on a two-run homer by 3B D.J. LaMahieu, RBI single to SS Anthony Volpe and then a two-run single to LF Jake Bauers and was then taken out.

His final line was 3.1 innings, seven hits, six runs, 0 walks and two strikeouts.

RHP Dominic Leone followed and threw 1.2 scoreless innings.

LHP Josh Walker came in next and gave up a sacrifice fly to pinch-hitter Josh Donaldson.

RHP Jeff Brigham got the last two outs in the top of the sixth.

RHP Drew Smith followed in the top of the seventh and was immediately ejected for having a foreign substance on his hands. Smith will be suspended for 10 games.

RHP John Curtiss had to come in and threw two scoreless innings in the top of the seventh and eighth.

RHP David Robertson threw a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a solo homer and later in the inning 3B Brett Baty drove in a run with a RBI single.

In the bottom of the second, 2B Jeff McNeil came through with a two-run single.

In the bottom of the third, 1B Mark Canha drove in a run on a RBI ground-out.

The bats did not do much the rest of the game and wasted a golden scoring opportunity in the bottom of the eighth with the based loaded and one out, but then SS Francisco Lindor and RF Starling Marte struck out to end the inning.

The offense went 3-15 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 14 at home against the Yankees at 7:10 p.m.
