The New York Mets beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 this afternoon at PNC Park to snap their seven-game losing streak and improved their record to 31-34.
The Met offense was held scoreless for the first two innings, but in the top of the third LF Tommy Pham led off with a double and three batters later CF Brandon Nimmo drove in the first run of the game with a RBI single.
The bats did not do much for the next three innings until the top of the seventh after RF Starling Marte led off with an infield single and three batters later, SS Luis Guillorme was intentionally walked.
1B Mark Canha followed with a go-ahead two-run double.
In the top of the eighth, rookie catcher Francisco Alvarez continued his torrid start with a solo homer for his 12th homer of the season.
In the top of the ninth, Pham singled with one out and then stole second.
Two batters later, Canha capped off his stellar day at the plate with another two-run double.
RHP Kodai Senga started out well with two scoreless innings, but got into a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third after he gave up three consecutive walks with two walks.
Senga was saved by his defense after Nimmo made an incredible catch up the center field wall to rob RF Connor Joe of an extra base hit which would have scored three runs.
Senga gave an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth after Guillorme and 2B Jeff McNeil made errors which led to a run.
