Mets Beat Phillies 4-2 Led By Strong Outing From Scherzer

 The New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park to snap their three-game losing streak and improved their record to 35-41.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first after RF Starling Marte hit a solo homer.

After a scoreless top of the second, 2B Luis Guillorme led off the top of the third with a triple and two batters later CF Brandon Nimmo hit a RBI single.

In the top of the sixth, Nimmo led off the inning with a single and then Marte and SS Lindor followed with singles to load the bases.

1B Pete Alonso came up next and drove in a run on an RBI ground-out.

DH Tommy Pham followed with a RBI single.

RHP Max Scherzer started out well with three scoreless innings, but in the bottom of the fourth gave up a solo homer to RF Nick Castellanos.

Scherzer was able work around a single by 2B Bryson Stott after he retired 3B Alec Bohm on a ground-out to end the inning.

Scherzer gave up a lead-off double to CF Brandon Marsh in the bottom of the fifth and then three batters later, gave up a RBI single to SS Trea Turner.

Scherzer then struck out DH Bryce Harper to keep the game tied.

Scherzer came back out and threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was six innings, seven hits, two runs, one walk and eight strikeouts.

Scherzer had sharp command of his slider and fastball.

He picked up his seventh win and lowered his ERA to 3.95.

LHP Brooks Raley came in next and got two outs in the bottom of the seventh and was then taken out.

RHP Adam Ottavino followed and struck out Turner to end the inning.

Ottavino came back out for the bottom of the eighth and walked two batters and retired one hitter and was then taken out.

RHP David Robertson came in next and was able to get Stott to ground into a double play to end the inning.

Robertson stayed in for the bottom of the ninth and was able to induce a game-ending double play to pick up his 11th save on the season.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Sunday, June 25 at the Phillies at 1:35 p.m.
