Mets Lose to Padres 4-2 After Offense Struggles

 The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 4-2 tonight at Citi Field and dropped their record to 6-6.

LHP David Peterson started out well with four scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth.

Peterson gave up singles to catcher Luis Campusano and RF Brandon Dixon and then got SS Xander Bogaerts to ground into a double play.

Peterson was not able to get out of the inning unscathed after he gave up a two-run double to the following hitter 3B Manny Machado.

Peterson stayed in for the top of the sixth and retired the first two hitters then gave up a two-out single to 2B Ha-Seong Kim and was then taken out.

His final line was 5.2 innings, six hits, two runs, two walks and six strikeouts.

RHP Denyl Reyes followed with 1.1 scoreless innings.

LHP Brooks Raley came in next and threw a scoreless top of the eighth.

RHP Dennis Santana followed in the top of the ninth and gave up a lead-off double to Campusano and three batters later, a two-run double to Bogaerts.

In the bottom of the first, CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a walk and then RF Starling Marte singled and SS Francisco Lindor walked to load the bases with no one out.

1B Pete Alonso came up next and struck out and then DH Mark Canha grounded into a double play to end the inning.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the second and third, Lindor led off with a single and then Alonso followed with a single.

Alonso was then picked off first, but Canha came through with a sacrifice fly to score Lindor.

The bats did do much for the next few innings until the bottom of the ninth, after Alonso led off with a walk and two batters later, 2B Jeff McNeil walked.

LF Tommy Pham followed with a RBI single, but then pinch-hitter Tomas Nido grounded out and catcher Francisco Alvarez struck out to end the game.

The offense struggled all night with men on base and went 1-8 with runners in scoring position leaving seven runners on base.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, April 12 at home against the Padres at 1:10 p.m.
