Mets Sweep Yankees 3-2 On Walk-Off Single By Starling Marte

 The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 3-2 tonight at Citi Field to sweep their two-game series and third consecutive win to improve their record to 61-37.

After a scoreless bottom of the first, 1B Pete Alonso continued his torrid stretch with a solo homer in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, catcher Tomas Nido led off with a double and three batters later, SS Francisco Lindor hit a RBI single to score Nido.

The bats did do much after that until the bottom of the ninth after 3B Eduardo Escobar led off with a double and then Nido followed with a sacrifice bunt.

CF Brandon Nimmo then reached on an error and RF Starling Marte came up next and delivered a walk-off single.

RHP Max Scherzer had another outstanding start with seven scoreless innings.

Scherzer worked out of several jams with pinpoint control using a wipeout slider, blazing fastball and sharp change-up.

His final line was seven innings, no runs, five hits, two walks and six strikeouts.

LHP David Peterson followed and got into immediate trouble after he walked DH Anthony Rizzo and then gave up a two-run homer to 2B Gleyber Torres and was then taken out.

RHP Seth Lugo came in next and had a dominant 1.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Lugo had his beautiful curveball working and it looked as sharp as it has all year along with his fastball. and picked up his second win of the year.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Friday, July 29th at the Miami Marlins at 6:40 p.m.
