Mets Rout Cubs 8-0 Led By Nimmo and Alonso

The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 8-0 tonight at Wrigley Field for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 56-34.

The offense got on the board early in the top of the first after RF Startling Marte singled with one out and then SS Francisco Lindor followed with a RBI double.

In the top of the second, 3B Eduardo Escobar singled with one out and DH Dom Smith walked.

Catcher Patrick Mazieka then hit a two-run double and CF Brandon Nimmo followed with a single.

Marte then hit a RBI single to bring in the third run of the inning.

After scoreless innings in the top of the fourth and fifth, 1B Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch with one out and then LF Jeff McNeil walked and then both advanced to second and third on a wild pitch.

2B Luis Guillorme followed with a walk to load the bases and then Escobar came with a RBI single.

In the top of the sixth, Nimmo hit a solo homer.

In the top of the eighth, Nimmo drew a lead-off walk and three batters later 1B Pete Alonso capped off the night with a two-run homer for his 74th RBI of the season which ties David Wright for the most RBI before the All-Star break with three gamed to go.

RHP Carlos Carrasco had a stellar outing with six scoreless innings allowing five hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Carrasco had excellent command of his slider and change-up which him escape out of two jams in the bottom of the bottom of the second and fifth with two double plays.

He picked up his 10th win and lowered his ERA to 4.27.

RHP Trevor Williams followed and picked up a rare three-inning save with three scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Williams gave up three hits with four strikeouts and picked up his first save of the year and lowered his ERA to 3.56.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Friday July 15th at the Cubs at 2:20 p.m.
