The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 2-1 tonight at Citi Field tonight for their third consecutive loss and dropped their record to 58-37.
RHP Chris Bassitt dominated through the first four innings retiring 12 consecutive hitters and then had a scoreless top of the fifth.
Bassitt ran into trouble in the top of the sixth after he gave up a one-out single to LF Jurickson Profar and then two batters later a two-run homer to 3B Manny Machado.
Bassitt was able to get out of the inning without allowing any more run striking out three and then threw a scoreless top of the seventh and was taken out after the inning.
His final line was seven innings, four hits, two runs, 0 walks and 11 strikeouts.
RHP Adam Ottavino followed with a dominating top of the eighth striking out the side.
RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless top of the ninth.
The offense did not much for the first eight innings until finally coming alive in the bottom of the ninth.
1B Pete Alonso led off with a single and three batters later 2B Luis Guillorme walked.
DH J.D. Davis followed with a RBI single, but catcher Tomas Nido popped out to second to end the game.
The bats continued to struggle once again wasting several scoring opportunities. They had the leadoff batter reach base in six out of the nine innings and were only able to score once in any of those innings.
They went 1-9 with runners in scoring position (RISP) and left eight men on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Sunday July 24th at home against the Padres at 7:08 p.m. on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.
