Mets Lose To Marlins 5-2 After Offense Struggles

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 5-2 tonight at Citi Field to snap their two-game losing streak and dropped their record to 52-32.

RHP Chris Bassitt had a scoreless top of the first, but in the top of the second, he gave up a lead-off infield single to DH Jesus Aguilar and two batters later a single to RF Avasail Garcia and then a RBI single to the following hitter to LF Bryan De La Cruz.

Bassitt then threw scoreless innings in the top of the third and fourth, but in the top of the fifth he gave up a lead-off double to De La Cruz and then a single to SS Miguel Rojas.

Two batters later Bassitt gave up a sacrifice fly to 3B Joey Wendle.

Bassitt had a 1-2-3 top of the sixth and gave up a one-out double to De La Cruz in the top of the seventh and was taken out.

His final line was 6.1 innings, six hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and three strikeouts.

RHP Drew Smith came in next and retired the next two hitters he faced to end the inning.

Smith stayed in the for the top of the eighth and gave up a one-out double to 2B Jon Berti and then a two-run homer to the following hitter 1B Garrett Cooper.

LHP Joely Rodriguez came on in the top of the ninth and gave up a lead-off infield hit to Garcia and then walked De La Cruz.

Two batters later Rodriguez gave up a sacrifice fly to catcher Jacob Stallings.

The offense was held scoreless for the two innings, but in the bottom of the third CF Brandon Nimmo hit a solo homer.

RF Starling Marte followed with a double, but was stranded at second.

In the bottom of the fourth, they wasted a scoring opportunity with runners on the corner and one out.

The bats did not do much for the next few innings, but came alive in the bottom of the eighth after SS Francisco Lindor hit a solo homer with one out and then two batters later, 2B Jeff McNeil was hit by a pitch and then LF Mark Canha and D.H. J.D. Davis walked to load the bases with two outs.

3B Eduardo Escobar came up next with a chance to tie the game or take the lead, but popped out to end the inning.

The offense struggled all to get a timely hit with men on base and left a total of 10 runners on base and were 0-7 with runners in scoring position (RISP).

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon, Saturday July 9th at home against the Marlins at 4:10 p.m.
