The New York Mets beat the Miami Marlins 6-0 this afternoon at Citi Field to take three out of four games in the series and improved their record to 45-24.
The offense got on the board early immediately in the bottom of the first after CF Brandon Nimmo led off with a double, RF Starling Marte followed by reaching on an error and then SS Francisco Lindor walked to load the bases.
Two batters later, LF Mark Canha walked to bring in the first run of the game.
After scoreless innings in the bottom of the second and third, DH J.D. Davis walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth and then 2B Jeff McNeil followed with a double.
3B Luis Guillorme came up next and hit a sacrifice fly to score McNeil and allow McNeil to advance to third.
McNeil then scored on a wild pitch by LHP Trevor Rogers.
In the bottom of the fifth, Nimmo and Marte led off with walks and two batters later 1B Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly which scored Nimmo,
In the bottom of the eighth, Davis was hut by a pitch with one out and then Guillorme followed with a single.
A wild pitch advanced Guillorme and Davis to second and third and then 3B Eduardo Escobar came up and broke the game open with a two-run infield single.
LHP David Peterson worked out of trouble in the first three innings overcoming two runners on base in each inning and did not allow any runs.
Peterson had a 1-2-3 top of the fourth and allowed two more runners in the top of the fifth, but got out of another jam after he got DH Jorge Soler to ground into a double play.
Peterson allowed two more baserunners in the top of the sixth and was taken out with one out in the top of the sixth.
His final line was 5.1 innings, six hits, 0 runs, two walks and seven strikeouts.
He had sharp command of his slider and change-up which helped him get key outs with men on base and escape several jams.
He picked up his fourth win and lowered his ERA to 3.18.
RHP Adam Ottavino came in next and was able to get out of further trouble after he retired RF Jerar Encarnacion on an inning-ending double play.
Ottavino stayed in for the top of the seventh and threw a scoreless inning.
RHP Drew Smith threw a scoreless top of the eighth.
RHP Yoan Lopez closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday June 21th at the Houston Astros at 8:10 p.m.
