The New York Mets beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 tonight at Citi Field to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 42-23.

The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first after LF Mark Canha led off with a walk and CF Brandon Nimmo followed with a hit by pitch.

SS Francisco Lindor grounded out and 1B Pete Alonso then popped out, but then 2B Jeff McNeil continued his torrid hit with a RBI single.

After scoreless innings in the bottom of the second and third, McNeil walked with one out in the bottom of the fourth and two batters later, 3B Luis Guillorme singled and then catcher Tomas Nido followed with a RBI single.

In the following inning, RF Nick Plummer led off with a walk and then Canha followed with a game-tying two run homer.

The bats did not do much in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but came alive in the bottom of the eighth.

DH J.D. Davis led off with a single and then Guillorme grounded into a fielder's choice to first which allowed Davis to reach second and then take third base on a throwing error by 1B Rowdy Tellez.

Nido followed with a strikeout for the second out of the inning, but then Plummer came up and grounded into a fielder's choice to score pinch-runner Starling Marte for the game winning run.

RHP Tylor Megill cruised through the first three innings, but gave up a solo homer to RF Christian Yelich leading off the the top of the fourth and but left the game later in the inning with right shoulder discomfort with the based loaded.

LHP Chasen Shreve came in next and gave up a two-run single to catcher Omar Narvaez and a RBI ground-out to RF Hunter Renfroe.

Schreve stayed in for the top of the fifth and threw a scoreless inning.

RHP Seth Lugo followed and threw two dominating scoring innings in the top of the sixth and seventh.

He gave up one hit and no walks with four strikeouts.

Lugo looked as sharp as he did all year with a lot of life on his fastball and a sharp curveball. His curve curveball had a lot of break on it and it brought back memories to his dominant season of 2019.

If Lugo can build off this game and regain the form that he had a few years ago, it bodes well for him and the rest of the bullpen.

RHP Drew Smith threw a scoreless top of the eighth and picked up his first win,

RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth and gave up a lead-off single to RF Hunter Renfroe and two batters later he gave up a bloop single to right field to pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor and then Plummer threw a perfectly executed relay throw to 1B Pete Alonso who then threw Renfroe out for the second out of the inning.

Diaz then struck out Yelich on a nasty slider to close it out and picked up his 13th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Friday June 17th at home against the Marlins at 7:10 p.m.
