Mets Lost to Marlins 3-1 on a walk-off homer by Garrett Cooper

Mets LHP Joey Luchessi (Credits to Rhonda Wise-USA Today Sports) The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 3-1 in Miami this afternoon and dropped their record to 21-18. The offense wasted a great scoring opportunity in the top of the first inning after 2B Wilfredo Tovar struck out with the based loaded with two outs. CF Johneshwy Fargas doubled with two outs in the top of the fourth, but RF Khalil Lee grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Jose Peraza and SS Francisco Lindor walked and after LF Cameron Maybin struck out, 1B Dom Smith came through with a RBI single. Tovar led off the top of the ninth with a walk, but was not able to get off first after Fargas struck out, Lee flied out and pinch-hitter James McCann flew out to center to end the inning. LHP Joey Luchessi had the best start of his Met career with four scoreless innings. Luchessi had two strikeouts in the bottom of the first and struck out the side in the bottom of the second. Luchessi got Marlins starter RHP Pablo Lopez to ground into a 1-6-3 double play in the bottom of the third and had two more strikeouts in the bottom of the fourth and was taken out after the inning with 43 pitches. His final line was 4 innings, one hit, 0 walks and 8 strikeouts. RHP Sean Reid-Foley came in next and worked out of a based loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth with two strikeouts and had a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth. Reid-Foley stayed in for the bottom of the seventh and gave up a couple of baserunners and was taken out with runners on first and third and one out. LHP Aaron Loup came in next and got pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson to fly out to Maybin and Maybin had a strong throw home, but catcher Tomas Nido dropped the ball which allowed RF Garrett Cooper to score. RHP Miguel Castro threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. RHP Drew Smith got the first two outs of the bottom of the ninth inning, but then gave up a single to 3B Brian Anderson and then a two-run walk-off homer to Cooper. The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Marlins at 1:10 p.m.
