The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after 3B Jonthan Villar reached on an infield single, SS Francisco Lindor followed with a walk. RF Brnadon Drury struck out, but Villar and Lindor pulled off a double steal to advance to second and third. 1B James McCann followed with a RBI ground-out. In the bottom of the sixth, LF Dominic Smith reached on an infield single and catcher Tomas Nido continued his torrid hitting as of late with a go-ahead two-run homer. RHP Jacob deGrom made his first start coming off the injured list with right side tighness and did a fine job allowing one run on three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts on 63 pitches in five innings. The only run deGrom allowed was a solo homer to 3B Ryan McMahon in the top of the second inning. His fastball had a lot of life and velocity topping out at 101.3 mph and he showed off his sharp slider as well. deGrom was back to his old self and didn't show any rust coming off an injury. RHP Miguel Castro followed with two scoreless innings in the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Castro gave up one walk and had four strikeouts. He picked up his first win. RHP Trevor May threw a scorleess top of the eighth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on and closed it out with a scorless top of the ninth inning with three strikeouts and worked around a walk to pick up his eighth save. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Rockies at 7:10 p.m.
