After a scoreless top of the first inning, LF Dominic Smith singled and CF Kevin Pillar doubled and then a run came home after Cardinals starter RHP Johan Oviedo threw a wild pitch which allowed the run to score with catcher Tomas Nido at the plate. Nido then came through with a two-run homer to increse the lead to 3-0. SS Jonathan Villar hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth inning, 2B Jeff McNeil singled and two batters later RF Michael Conforto walked to start the inning. Two batters later, Pillar and Villar both hit RBI singles. In the top of the seventh, 1B Pete Alonso and Conforto walked and then Smith singled to load the bases. Pillar then grounded into a fielder's choich which brought home a run. Reliever RHP Miguel Castro started the game in the bottom of the first as an "opener" and threw a scoreless inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. RHP Jordan Yamamoto followed and did a fine job allowing one run on four hits with no walks and one strikeouts in 2.2 innings. He picked up his first win. LHP Aaron Loup came in with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and gave up back-to-back singles which brought in a run but the run was charged to Yamamoto since he had given up the two hits prior to the run. Loup was able to get out of the fourth without allowing any more runs. RHP Trevor May followed with a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning. RHP Robert Gsellman gave up one run on two hits in the bottom of the sixth. RHP Jeurys Familia closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the seventh.
