Mets vs. Phillies Game 40 Recap

The New York Mets beat the Phillies 5-1 tonight and improved their record to 18-22.  The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the bottom of the third after LF Jeff McNeil led off with a ground-rule double and SS Andres Gimenez followed with a RBI single. Catcher Robinson Chirinos and CF Brandon Nimmo grounded out, but RF Michael Conforto continued his hot hitting with an RBI single.  In the bottom of the fourth inning, 3B Todd Frazier led off with a hit-by pitch and McNeil followed with another double. Gimenez then hit a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the night.  In the bottom of the fifth, Nimmo walked to lead-off the inning and Conforto singled. 3B J.D. Davis walked to load the bases and 1B Dom Smith hit a RBI ground-out to bring in Nimmo. Gimenez drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the sixth and came around to score on a RBI double by catcher Robinson Chirinos.

RHP Seth Lugo got off to a rocky start in the top of the first inning after he gave up a solo homer to 1B Rhys Hoskins. Lugo settled down after that with a 1-2-3 top of the second inning and worked around walks to CF Adam Haseley and RF Bryce Harper in the top of the third inning. He also was able to escape out of trouble in the top of the fourth inning after he gave up singles to SS Jean Segura and 3B Alec Bohm. Lugo had a 1-2-3 top of the fifth and was taken out of the game with 81 pitches. His final line was 5 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and 8 strikeouts. He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 2.05.  RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a scoreless top of the sixth inning. LHP Justin Wilson followed with a scoreless top of the seventh inning. RHP Miguel Castro threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and retired the first two hitters he faced and then walked the next two innings before striking out Hoskins to end the game.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at home against the Phillies at 1:10 p.m.
