Mets vs. Phillies Game 39 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 tonight and dropped their record to 17-22. RHP Rick Porcello had a scoreless top of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. Porcello gave up a single to 2B Jean Segura with one out and then Segura stole second. Former Met RF Jay Bruce followed with a RBI single, but Porcello didn't allow any more runs in the inning. In the top of the third inning, CF Andrew McCutchen and 1B Rhys Hoskins singled and then SS Didi Gregorious singled to bring in another run, but Porcello settled down after that. He had 1-2-3 innings in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and was taken out after the top of the sixth. His final line was 6 innings,  two runs, three hits, two walks and six strikeouts. RHP Jared Hughes came in next and retired the two hitters he faced, but then walked RF Phil Gosselin and then gave up a single to CF  Roman Quinn which bounced off SS Andres Gimenez's hand which brought home a run.  Hughes stayed in the for the top of the eighth and walked Hoskins and gave up a single to Gregarious and two batters later, Segura hit a ground ball to 3B J.D. Davis, but Davis threw the ball wide to 1B Dom Smith, which allowed the run to score. RHP Brad Brach had to come in and was able to finish out the top of the eighth inning and Brach stayed in for the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless inning.

The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings against Phillies starter RHP Jake Arrieta until the bottom of the fifth after Giminez singled with one out and two batters later RF Michael Conforto tied the game with a two-run homer. In the bottom of the eighth, CF Brandon Nimmo walked and Conforto stuck out, but Davis singled to right field. 1B Dom Smith then followed with a single to bring in Nimmo. 2B Robinson Cano was up next and hit a scorching line drive to Hoskins for the second out. 1B Pete Alonso popped out to end the inning.  The bats went down 1--2-3 in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at home against the Phillies at 7:10 p.m.
