The New York Mets traded LHP David Peterson to the Chicago Cubs last night for minor league infielder Cole Mathis.

Peterson has had a difficult season with a 6.09 ERA and 63 strikeouts and 30 walks in 68 innings. He has appeared in 16 games with 8 starts. The Cubs are in need of pitching after losing Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown to the injured list.

Mathis was a second round pick for the Cubs in 2024. He is hitting .272 with 10 homers and 12 doubles over 182 plate appearances between Single-A and High-A. He is ranked as the number 9 prospect in the system by Baseball America.
