The New York Mets signed utility man Joey Wendle today pending physical.

Wendle was an All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, but struggled with the Miami Marlins in 2023 hitting .212 with two home runs and 20 RBI in 318 plate appearances.

He brings versatility and even though was a primary shortstop last season, has also played second base and third base in the past.

Wendle can serve as a back-up to Francisco Lindor and Jeff McNeil as well as third base.

The New York Mets are signing RHP Luis Severino to a one-year $13 million deal.

Severino was a two-time All-Star with the Yankees, but is coming off a rough 2023 season with a 6.65 ERA in 89 1/3 innings before he was shut down with an oblique injury.

Mets Hire David Stearns As President of Baseball Operations

Mets POBO David Sterns (Photo Credits to Mike De Sisti)

The New York Mets hired David Stearns as the team's first President of Baseball Operations today for a five-year contract.

Sterns is 38 years ago and previously worked for the Milwaukee Brewers as President of Baseball Operations from 2015-2022 and remained in an advisory role in 2023.

He helped the Brewers made four consecutive playoff appearances from 2018-2021.

Prior to the Brewers, Stearns was Assistant General Manager for the Houston Astros from 2012-2015.

Stearns grew up in Manhattan as a Mets fan and graduated from Harvard University and worked for the Mets and Cleveland Guardians baseball operations out of college and also worked in the MLB Commissioner's office as well the Arizona Fall League.

This is a huge hire for the Mets since owner Steve Cohen has been looking to hire a President of Baseball Operations since he bought the team in 2020 after previously hiring Jared Porter and Zach Scott who were both fired.

Sterns helped devlope the Brewers into a playoff contender and has full authority to run the front office with the highest payroll in baseball to work with.

He has a nice core of players to work with such as Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil as well as a much improved farm system with Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, Luisangel Acuna, Kevin Parada and Ryan Clifford.

It's an exciting day for the franchise and will be fun to see how Stearns is able to turn the Mets into a winning organization for years to come.

The New York Mets are called up top prospect infielder Ronny Mauricio when the rosters expand on Friday.

Mauricio has hit well this season with 23 homers and 24 steals in 115 games in Triple-A Syracuse.

He is a natural shortship but has not found a permanent home at another position, but has gotten more playing time at second base.

Mauricio has proven to have power and speed, and will hopefully provide a spark and energy to the team in the last month of the season.
