The New York Mets lost to the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 tonight at Citi Field to snap their three-game winning streak and dropped their record to 68-79.
LHP David Peterson started out well with four scoreless innings, but in the top of the fifth was let down by his defense after 3B Ronny Mauricio made a key error and then threw a wild pitch which allowed a run to score and catcher Omar Narvaez made a throwing error.
In the top of the sixth, Peterson gave up a two-run homer to 1B Spencer Spencer Steer and then gave up two more baserunners and was taken out.
His final line was 5.2 innings, six hits, three runs, two walks and 10 strikeouts.
RHP Grant Hartwig came in next and gave up a two-run homer to 2B Jonathan India in the top of the seventh.
RHP Drew Smith followed and got the last two outs in the top of the eighth.
RHP Phil Bickford threw a scoreless top of the ninth.
The Met offense did not do much for the first five innings until the bottom of the sixth after 1B Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer his 45th homer of the season.
The offense wasted scoring opportunities in the next two innings and went 1-10 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.
The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Saturday September 16 at home against the Reds at 7:10 p.m.
