The offense got off to a fast start in the top of the first inning after 3B Jonathan Villar and SS Francisco Lindor singled and then catcher James McCann continued his hot hitting with a three-run homer. McCann has hit well in the last games going for 7-14 with five extra-base hits in the last five games. 1B Pete Alonso, CF Kevin Pillar, and LF Dom Smith all followed with singles to load the bases and then RF Brandon Drury grounded into a double play which brought in another run. In the top of the second, Villar doubled with one out and two batters later, McCann drove in his fourth run of the game with a RBI single. The bats went quiet for the next two innings until the the top of the fifth when Pillar and Smith led off with singles and then Drury hit a RBI single for his second RBI of the game. The offense didn't do much for the next few innings until the top of the ninth when Lindor led off the inning with a single and reached second on an error by Diamondbacks CF Ketel Marte. McCann grounded out, but after Lindor advanced to third on a passed ball by catcher Carson Kelly, 1B Pete Alonso came through and delivered the game-winning RBI single. LHP David Peterson had a difficult bottom of the first inning allowing four runs on three hits and recorded only one out. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come in and gave up a RBI single to Diamondbacks starter LHP Madison Bumgarner, but that run was charged to Peterson. Gsellman stayed in and did an excellent job with 3.2 scoreless innings with two hits and one strikeout. RHP Seth Lugo followed in his first appearance of the year and threw a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning, but gave up singles to SS Nick Ahmed and 2B Ildemaro Vargas which scord a run. Lugo was able to get out of the inning without allowing any more runs. RHP Migeul Castro then threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. Castro picked up his second win. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning to pick up his tenth save of the season. The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the San Diego Padres at 10:10 p.m.
