Mets LHP David Peterson (Credits to MetsMerizedOnline.com) The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 5-2 tonight at Citi Field and improved their record to 33-25. The offense was held scoreless for the first three innings against Cubs starter RHP Jake Arrieta until the bottom of the fourth inning until LF Dom Smith singled with one out and then two batters later RHP Billy McKinney walked. Catcher James McCann followed with a RBI single and then the next hitter CF Kevin Pillar broke the game open with a two-run double. In the bottom of the fifth, Smith hit a solo homer to deep center field to extend the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth with two outs, Pillar and 2B Luis Guillorme walked and then pinch-hitter Brandon Drury came up and hit a RBI single which scored Guillorme. LHP David Peterson had an outstanding start with six scoreless innings allowing one hit with two walks and three strikeouts. He picked up his second win and lowered his ERA to 5.60. Peterson had sharp command of his slider and change-up. He was able to keep the ball down and looked much more confident and relaxed on the mound. He worked at a fast pace and kept the hitters off balanced. RHP Trevor May followed in the top of the seventh and had a difficult outing allowing back-to-back homers to 1B Anthony Rizzo and 3B Patrick Wisdom with one out. May came back to strike out former Met CF Jake Marisnick, but then was taken out for LHP Aaron Loup. Loup stuck out RF Jason Heyward to end the inning and stayed in for the top of the eighth. Loup struck out SS Sergio Alcantara and got 2B Eric Sogard to fly out for the second out. He retired pitch-hitter Javier Baez on a ground-out to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and had a domnating performance striking out the side on 13 pitches. Diaz struck out the heart of the order catcher Wilson Contreas, LF Kris Bryant and 1B Anthony Rizzo to close it out with a blazing fastball and sharp slider. He picked up his 13th save of the season.
