The New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 4-0 tonight in San Diego to snap a three-game losing streak and improved ther record to 28-23.
The offense was held scoreless for the first four innings until the top of the fifth when 2B Jose Peraza snapped a 14-inning scoreless streak with a solo homer.
Two batters later, SS Francisco Lindor also hit a solo homer.
In the following inning, CF Kevin Pillar and catcher Tomas Nido singled to start off the inning and then pinch-hitter Jonathan Villar delivered with a RBI single.
The bats went quiet for the next couple of innings until the top of the ninth when Lindor led off with a double and after 1B Pete Alonso grounded out and LF Dom Smith walked, Pillar came through with a RBI single.
RHP Jacob deGrom cruised through the bottom of the first inning, and worked around a single by star SS Fernando Tatis Jr in the bottom of the second.
DeGrom had a 1-2-3 bottom of the third, but ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth after he gave up a single to 2B Jake Cronenworth, and then Tatis Jr reached on an error by Lindor and then he gave up a single to 1B Eric Hosmer to load the bases with one out.
DeGrom showed his trademark composure and why he's the best pitcher in baseball by coming back to strike out to RF Wil Myers and LF Tucupita Marcano to end the inning.
deGrom settled down with a 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth inning and worked around a walk by Tatis Jr in the bottom of the sixth.
deGrom had a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning with two more strikeouts and was taken out with 85 pitches.
His final line was 7 innings, 0 runs, three hits, one walk and 11 strikeouts.
He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 0.62.
deGrom has now given up one or no runs in his first nine starts of the year.
RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning with two strikeouts.
RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth.
The Mets next game is at the Padres tomorrow afternoon at 4:10 p.m.
