Mets vs. White Sox Game 107 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 tonight for their sixth consecutive win and improved their record to 52-55. The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings until the top of the sixth inning after catcher Wilson Ramos hit a RBI ground-out. In the top of the ninth inning, Ramos reached on an error by White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson and pinch-hitter J.D Davis followed with a single. 3B Todd Frazier came through with an RBI single. Four batters later, CF Michael Conforto broke the game open with a two-run single.

RHP Jacob deGrom had an outstanding start allowing one run on five hits in seven innings. He gave up two walks and had 11 strikeouts. deGrom worked out of a difficult bottom of the third inning, but settled in after that and dominated the rest of the way. LHP Justin Wilson followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and escaped from a based loaded jam. Wilson picked up his second win. RHP Edwin Diaz gave up a solo homer to CF Leury Garcia in the bottom of the ninth, but didn't give up any more runs and was able to pick up his 24th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon against the White Sox at 2:10 p.m.

The New York Mets defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-2 last night in 11 innings for their fifth consecutive win and improved their record to 51-55. In the top of the second inning, 3B Todd Frazier and SS Amed Rosario singled and Rosario stole second. Catcher Tomas Nido hit an RBI ground-out to bring in Frazier. In the top of the fifth inning, CF Michael Conforto led off with a walk and 1B Pete Alonso singled to send Conforto to third base. 2B Robinson Cano hit a high chopper ground-ball to score Conforto. After that the bats went quiet and wasted several scoring opportunities until the top of the eleventh inning after Rosario led off with a single and LF Jeff McNeil and Conforto hit back-to-back homers.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd was outstanding allowing one unearned run on five hits and one walk with eleven strikeouts in 7.1 innings.. Syndergarrd had dominant stuff from the beginning and was throwing 100 mph with a nasty curve-ball and slider and wasn't fazed at all by all the trade rumors swirling around him. LHP Justin Wilson came in next in the bottom of the eighth inning and gave up a bunt single to LF Jon Jay and was then taken out. RHP Seth Lugo followed and got 1B Jose Abreau to ground into a double-play to end the inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the bottom of the ninth inning and had another difficult outing and gave up a sacrifice fly to SS Tim Anderson to tie the game to blow his fifth save. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the tenth and eleventh innings and picked up his second win.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the White Sox at 8:10 p.m.

Mets Trade Jason Vargas to Phillies

The New York Mets traded LHP Jason Vargas to the Phildelphia Phillies today for minor league catcher Austin Bossart. Bossart is hitting .195 in Double-A, but is known as a strong defender. The Mets are also sending the Phillies $2.9 million, which saves them $2 M. Vargas had a 4.01 ERA in 94.1 innings this year.

Mets Acquire Marcus Stroman

The New York Mets acquired RHP Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays today in exchange for minor league pitching prospects LHP Anthony Kay and RHP Simeon Woods Richardson. The Mets will also  be receiving $2.5 million from the Blue Jays which will negate the remainder of Strolman's contract for the rest of the year. Kay has a 3.13 ERA in 97.2 innings between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. Richardson has a 4.25 ERA, 97 strikeouts and 17 walks in 78.1 innings with Single-A Columbia. 

Stroman is from Medford, New York and has a 2.96 ERA over 21 starts for the Blue Jays this year with 99 strikeouts and 35 walks in 124.2 innings this year.

Mets vs. Pirates Game 105 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 this afternoon to sweep their three-game series and fourth consecutive win and improved their record to 50-55. In the bottom of the first inning, LF Jeff McNeil led off with a hit-by pitch and was taken out of the game. X-rays were negative and revealed he had a shin contusion.  CF Michael Conforto followed with a two-run homer. Three batters later, third baseman Todd Frazier hit a RBI single. LF J.D. Davis followed with a RBI single. SS Amed Rosario also followed with a RBI single. The bats went quiet for the next few innings until the bottom of the sixth after Conforto reached on a fielding error by Pirates CF Starling Marte, which brought home a run. 1B Pete Alonso grounded into a fielder's choice which brought home a run.

LHP Jason Vargas started out well with two scoreless innings, but gave up a  solo homer to catcher Jacob Stallings in the top of the third inning. Vargas gave up another run in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Stallings. He gave up a RBI double to LF Melky Cabrera and was taken out with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. His final line was 5.2 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks and strikeouts. He picked up his sixth win. RHP Seth Lugo followed and threw 1.1 scoreless innings. LHP Justin Wilson threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Tyler Bashlor gave up a two-run home to RF Bryan Reynolds in the top of the ninth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz gave a two-run homer to 1B Jose Ozuna, but was able to get the last two outs and close it out and picked up his 23th save.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday, July 30th in Chicago against the White Sox at 8:10 p.m.

Mets vs. Pirates Game 104 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 49-55. LHP Steven Matz had an outstanding performance and threw the best outing of his career. Matz threw a complete-game shutout (first of his career) and allowing five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts on 99 pitches. He picked up his sixth win and lowered his ERA to 4.32. Matz was efficient all night and managed to keep pitch count down. He showed composure and posed and didn't get rattled with men on base and had a sharp curve-ball and change-up to the right-handed hitters.  Matz has looked much better since working out of the bullpen before the All-Star break and will hopefully continue this run of success going forward.

The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings against Pirates starter RHP Trevor Williams until the bottom of the sixth inning after CF Michael Conforto hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the seventh inning, 3B Todd Frazier hit a pop-out single and LF J.D. Davis followed with a two-run homer.

The New York Mets defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 48-55. The offense provided plenty of power with four home runs. RF Jeff McNeil hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. 3B Todd Frazier hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Two batters later, catcher Wilson Ramos hit a solo homer.

RHP Zack Wheeler made his return after he was on the injured list (IL) for 19 days due to shoulder fatigue. Wheeler gave up three runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He picked up his seventh win. LHP Luis Avilan followed and got the last two outs in the top of the sixth inning. RHP Robert Gsellman came in next and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. LHP Justin Wilson threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Seth Lugo came on in the top of the ninth and threw a 1-2-3 inning and picked up his first save of the year. Lugo has 10.2 scoreless innings over his last 10 appearances.

The New York Mets defeated the San Diego Padres 4-0 this afternoon to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 47-55. The offense got the board early in the bottom of the first inning after LF J.D. Davis walked, 1B Pete Alonso singled and catcher Wilson Ramos hit a sacrifice fly. 2B Robinson Cano followed with a single and 3B Todd Frazier hit a two-run double. RF Michael Conforto followed with a RBI single.

RHP Jacob deGrom had another outstanding start with seven scoreless innings. deGrom's final line was 7 innings,  four hits, one walk and nine strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 2.86, which is fifth in the National League and his lowest ERA since April 3. RHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless top of the eighth with three strikeouts. Lugo has had a  terrific month with 9.2 scoreless innings and 13 strikeouts and 3 walks. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth, but was taken out after getting hit on his left food on a line drive by 3B Manny Machado. LHP Luis Avilan had to come in and got the last three outs with two strikeouts.

Mets vs. Padres Game 101 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the San Diego Padres 7-2 tonight and dropped their record to 46-55. RHP Noah Syndergarrd started out well with a scoreless top of the first of the inning, but gave up a run in the top of the second. Syndegarrd gave up a lead-off walk to CF Manuel Margot in the top of the third inning and 3B Manny Machado and later allowed a sacrifice fly to 1B Eric Hosmer. LF Dom Smith later two errors in the inning which allowed two more runs to score.  Syndergarrd settled down with scoreless innings in the top of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. His final line was  7 innings, four runs (three earned), 8 hits, 8 strikeouts and 5 walks. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and was unable to retire three batters he faced including an RBI double to catcher Austin Hedges. RHP Tyler Bashlor followed and gave up an RBI single to SS Fernando Tatis. RHP Stephen Nogosek gave up a sacrifice fly to LF Hunter Renfroe in the top of the ninth inning.

The offense got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning after RF Jeff McNeil led off with a double and CF Michael Conforto followed with an RBI single. In the bottom of the third inning, Conforto doubled, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a ground-out by 2B Robinson Cano. After that, there were several scoring opportunities wasted and had their best chance after loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh with two outs, but Conforto struck out against Padres RHP Craig Stammen.

Mets vs. Padres Game 100 Recap

The New York Mets beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 tonight and improved their record to 46-54. 2B Robinson Cano led the way offensively with three homers and five RBI's. Cano singled in his first at-bat and hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth and another two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Hopefully he can build off this performance and finish up strong the rest of the season.

LHP Jason Vargas was outstanding with six scoreless innings and didn't allow his first hit until the top of the fifth inning. Vargas kept the Padres off balanced all night with a sharp change-up that was effective against the righty-bats and mixed in a curveball and fastball as well. His final line was 6 innings, 1 hit, 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. He picked up his fifth win and lowered his ERA to 3.96. RHP Tyler Bashlor followed and retired his first two batters in the top of the seventh, but then gave up a single to catcher Franklin Meija and walked 2B Luis Urias and was taken out. RHP Robert Gsellman had to come in and retired pinch-hitter Wil Myers to end the inning. Gsellman stayed in for the top of the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off single to SS Fernando Tatis Jr, who stole second and CF Manuel Margot followed with an infield hit. He was able to settle down and got 3B Manny Machado to pop out, but was able to limit the damage to a run after only allowing a sacrifice fly to LF Hunter Renfroe, but stuck out RF Franmill Reyes to end the inning. LHP Justin Wilson came on in the top of the ninth inning and walked 1B Eric Hosmer and Meija and was then pulled. RHP Edwin Diaz had to come in and gave up a two-run double to Tatis, but was able to close it out and picked up his 22th save.

Mets vs. Giants Game 99 Recap

The New York Mets lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in 12 innings this afternoon to lose three out of four games in the series and dropped their record to 45-54. LHP Steven Matz threw a scoreless bottom of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning after he gave up single to catcher Buster Posey, single to 3B Zach Green and a RBI single to SS Brandon Crawford, but was able to limit the damage to one run. Matz threw a scoreless bottom of the third inning, but gave up another run in the bottom of the fourth after he allowed doubles to Posey and Green. He settled down after that and didn't allow a hit the rest of the way and worked around an error by 3B Todd Frazier in the bottom of the fifth. Matz finished up strong striking out the side in the bottom of the sixth and was then taken out. His final line was 6 innings, 6 hits, 2 earned runs, one walk and six strikeouts. LHP Justin Wilson came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Seth Lugo followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia came on in the bottom of the eleventh inning and got into immediate trouble walking 1B Brandon Belt and Posey and was then taken out. RHP Robert Gsellman came in and was able to escape out of the jam after pinch-hitter Alex Dickerson to ground into a double and 3B Pablo Sandoval to fly out to end the inning. Gsellman stayed in for the bottom of the 12th and gave up a solo walk-off homer to CF Mike Yastremski.

The offense got on the board in the top of the second inning after CF Michael Conforto and SS Amed Rosario hit solo homers. The bats went quiet after that and LF J.D. Davis and 3B Todd Frazier had the only other hits.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action back home at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 23th against the San Diego Padres at 7:10 p.m.

Mets vs. Giants Game 98 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the San Francisco Giants 11-4 this afternoon to snap their two-game losing streak and improved their record to 45-53. 1B Dom Smith drove in the first run of the game with a solo homer in the top of the second inning. 3B Todd Frazier tripled in the top of the fourth and Smith drove him in with an RBI single. SS Amed Rosario led off the top of the fifth with a single and stole second and two batters later, RF Jeff McNeil hit a two-run homer. Frazier hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth and LF J.D. Davis and Rosario singled. Pete Alonso came up as a pinch-hitter and broke the game open with a three-run homer that traveled 444 feet. Smith capped off his big day at the plate with a two-run single in the top of the ninth. Davis followed with a RBI single.

RHP Walker Lockett had a solid start allowing one run on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts in five innings for the best outing of his young career and allowed one run on a RBI single by pinch-hitter Joe Panik in the bottom of the fifth. He settled in a groove and one point retiring nine in a row from the first to the fourth and threw 43 out of 58 pitches for strikes. LHP Justin Wilson came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. RHP Tyler Bashlor followed with two scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings with two strikeouts. RHP Stephen Nogosek allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth, but was able to close it out.

RHP Jacob deGrom had an outstanding start throwing seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, 3 hits and 3 walks. deGrom lowered his ERA to 3.02 and passed team broadcaster Ron Darling on the team's all-time strikeout list. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. RHP Jacob Rhyme came off his suspension and threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning, but gave up a unearned run in the bottom of the tenth inning after LF Dominic Smith misplayed a pop-out by 3B Pablo Sandoval.

The offense was shut down by Giants starter RHP Tyler Beede and managed only three hits by RF Jeff McNeil, 2B Robinson Cano and catcher Wilson Ramos. They left five runners on base and were 0-1 with runners in scoring position.

The New York Mets lost to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 last night in 16  innings in a hearbreaking loss to snap their four game losing streak and dropped their record to 44-52. In the top of the first inning, RF Jeff McNeil led off with a double, LF J.D. Davis singled and 1B Pete Alonso drove in the first run of the game after he grounded into a double play. After that the offense was shut down by Giants LHP Madison Bumgarner and weren't able to generate any more runs. Bumgarner came out after nine inning, and in the top of the tenth inning, LHP Will Smith came in and 2B Robinson hit a lead-off single and SS Amed Rosario doubled. Catcher Tomas Nido struck out, and catcher Wilson Ramos was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Michael Conforto had a chance to come to through, but struck out as well as McNeil to end the inning. The bats went quiet after the inning and didn't generate another scoring chance until the 13th after Conforto and Davis singled with two outs, but Alonso flew out to end the inning. In the top of the 14th, LHP Steven Matz had to pinch hit after they ran out of bench players and struck out. In the top of the 15th, Nido walked to lead off the inning and Conforto singled with one out, but McNeil grounded into a force out and Davis popped out to end the threat. In the top of the 16th, Alonso led off with a solo homer for his 32th homer of the year.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd started out well with three scoreless innings, but gave up three straight singles in the bottom of the fourth inning and gave up a sacrifice fly to CF Kevin Pillar, but was able to limit the damage to one run. Syndegarrd settled down after that with easy innings in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning, and escaped out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh after allowing a lead-off triple and go 1B Brandon Belt to fly out to end the inning and was taken out after the inning. His final line was 7 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. LHP Seth Lugo followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning with two strikeouts. LHP Luis Avilan threw a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning. RHP Edwin Diaz threw a scoreless bottom of the tenth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia threw a scoreless bottom of the eleventh inning. RHP Robert Gselman threw two scoreless innings in the bottom of the 12th and 13th innings. LHP Justin Wilson threw a scoreless bottom of the 14th innings. RHP Chris Mazza threw a scoreless bottom of the 15th inning,but gave up back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the 16th and wound up loading the bases and gave up a walk-off single to 2B Donovan Solando.

Mets vs. Twins Game 95 Recap

The New York Mets defeated the Minnesota Twins 14-4 this afternoon for their fourth consecutive win and improved their record to 44-51. The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until SS Amed Rosario hit a solo homer in the top of the third inning. In the top of the fourth inning, 1B Pete Alonso reached on an error, catcher Wilson Ramos doubled, and DH Robinson Cano was hit by a pitch to load the bases. 3B Todd Frazier grounded into a double which brought home a run, but they weren't able to score any other runs that inning. After scoreless innings in the top of the fifth and sixth inning, the bats came alive in the top of the seventh. Rosario led off with a single and 2B Adeiny Hechavarria followed with a double. RF Jeff McNeil popped out, but Dom Smith came up after he pinch-hit for LF J.D Davis and came through with a three-run homer. In the top of the seventh, Cano led off with a walk later on with two outs, Rosario hit a single. Hechavarria hit a routine fly ball, but LF Eddie Rosario dropped it, which allowed Cano and Rosario to score. McNeil followed with an RBI double and Smith hit an RBI single. 1B Pete Alonso came up and hit a two-run homer that traveled 474 feet for his 31st homer of the year. It was also his 54th extra base hit of the year which sets a club rookie record as well as his 71st RBI. In the top of the ninth, Rosario hit a two-run triple and Hechhavarria hit a RBI double.

LHP Jason Vargas had a solid outing allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in six innings. Vargas picked up his fourth win. RHP Jeurys Familia followed with a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. RHP Chris Mazza gave up one run in two innings. 

The Mets next game is tomorrow night at the San Francisco Giants at 9:45 p.m.

The New York Mets defeated the Minnesota Twins 3-2 tonight for their third consecutive win and improved their record to 43-51. In the top of the first inning, 2B Robinson Cano drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly. CF Michael Conforto followed by driving in a run after he reached on an error by Twins second baseman Jonathan Schoop. Conforto drove in another run in the top of the fifth after he reached on an infield single and finished the night 4-4.

LHP Steven Matz had a difficult outing allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Matz was taken out after four innings due to a limited pitch count. RHP Robert Gsellman followed with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. LHP Luis Avilan came in next and threw a scoreless inning and picked up his first win. LHP Justin Wilson continued his second half success with a scoreless bottom of the seventh. RHP Seth Lugo threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth and has looked like he has gotten his sharpness back on his curveball and life on fastball. RHP Edwin Diaz had a shaky bottom of the ninth inning and loaded the bases with two outs, but was able to get out of the inning after he got DH Nelson Cruz to pop out and he picked up his 21st save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow afternoon at the Twins at 1:10 p.m.

Zack Wheeler Placed on Injured List With Right Shoulder Fatigue

New York Mets RHP Zack Wheeler has been placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue. Wheeler was given an extra start before the All-Star break to give another audition to contending teams before trading deadline and had a difficult outing allowing six runs against the Phillies. LHP Steven Matz will be taking Wheeler's place in the rotation on Tuesday. It is not a serious injury and Wheeler has been dealing with fatigue for some time now and is being put on the IL for precautionary reasons.

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-2 this afternoon to take two out of three games in the series and improved their record to 42-51. It was their first series win since June 7-9 against the Colorado Rockies and first series win on the road since at the Washington Nationals during the first week of the series. RF Jeff McNeil hit his eighth homer of the year on the first pitch of the game. The offense went quiet until the top of the fourth after 2B Robinson Cano singled to lead off the inning. Catcher Wilson Ramos walked and third baseman Todd Frazier singled to load the bases. SS Adeiny Hecchavaia hit an RBI ground-out to bring Cano home. RHP Jacob deGrom walked to load the bases and McNeil hit into a force out at home. CF Michael Conforto came through with an RBI single to increase the lead to 3-1. Hecchavaria and pinch-hitter Luis Guillorme singled to lead off the top of the sixth inning and McNeil hit a ground-ball to first base, but Heccharavia scored after 1B Garrett Cooper made a throwing error. In the top of the seventh inning, Cano homered to lead off the inning. In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter SS Amed Rosario lead off with a double after coming off the bench today. McNeil was hit by a pitch, Conforto flew out and first baseman Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly.

RHP Jacob deGrom started out well with a scoreless bottom of the first inning with two strikeouts, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning. 2B Starlin Castro singled and LF Curtis Granderson walked, but he struck out CF Cesar Puello, and he walked catcher Bryan Holliday to load the bases. deGrom struck out Marlins starter RHP Sandy Alcantara, but he gave up a RBI single to SS Miguel Rojas and would have been two runs but RF Jeff McNeil threw out Curtis Granderson at home. He settled down after that with scoreless innings in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings and was taken out due to a high pitch count with 94 pitches. His final line was five innings, 6 hits, one run, three walks and six strikeouts. He picked up his fifth win. LHP Justin Wilson followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia followed and gave up a one-out single to Rojas and then walked 2B Neil Walker and 1B Garrett Cooper to load the bases and was then taken out. RHP Seth Lugo came on and struck out RF Brian Anderson and got Castro to ground out to end the inning. RHP Robert Gsellman came in the bottom of the eighth inning and threw a scoreless inning and in the bottom of the ninth inning, he gave up a two-out homer to Cooper and a double to Anderson. Gsellman was able to get Castro to ground-out for the last out.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return to action on Tuesday night in Minnesota at Target Field against the Twins at 8:10 p.m.

The New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 4-2 this afternoon for their first win after the All-Star break and improved their record to 41-51. The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the top of the third inning after CF Michael Conforto hit a two-run homer. The bats went quiet until the top of the eighth inning after 2B Robinson Cano came through with a two-run homer. This was Cano's 5th homer of the year and first with men on base.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd had a strong outing allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Syndergarrd lowered his ERA to 4.55 and continued his dominance against the Marlins with a record of 7-1 in ten starts with a 1.75 ERA. He picked up his seventh win. RHP Seth Lugo followed and threw a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning with two strikeouts. RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless bottom of the ninth inning and picked up his 20th save.

The New York Mets lost to the Miami Marlins 8-4 tonight in their first game back after the All-Star game and dropped their record to 40-51. LHP Jason Vargas started out well with two scoreless innings, but ran into trouble in the bottom of the third inning. Vargas gave up a single to Marlins starter LHP Caleb Smith, but was distracted by Smith at first base for some reason and threw over at first several times. He then gave up a single to lead-off hitter SS Mel Rojas and then a three-run homer to LF Curtis Granderson. 1B Garrett Cooper followed with a solo homer. Vargas gave up more runs to Cooper after he hit a RBI double. His final line was six runs, five hits, one walk, and one strikeout in five innings. RHP Robert Gsellman gave up a run in the bottom of the sixth. RHP Chris Mazza gave up a run in 1.2 innings.

The offense was held scoreless for the first two innings until the top of the third inning after catcher Wilson Ramos hit a two-run single with the based loaded. After that the bats went quiet until the top of the ninth inning after 3B Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer.

Mets Recall Chris Mazza and Designate Wilmer Font for Assignment

The New York Mets announced today that they have recalled RHP Chris Mazza from Triple-A Syracuse and designated RHP Wilmer Font for assignment. Font was acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in May for minor league pitcher RHP Neraldo Caltalina. Mazza was drafted in the 27th round and made his debut last month allowing one run in four innings with two strikeouts.

Pete Alonso Wins HR Derby

New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso won the Home Run Derby tonight and put on a show for the fans in Cleveland. In the first round, Alonso beat hometown hero Cleveland Indian Carlos Santana hitting 14 homers to Santana's 13. In the second round against Brave and National League East star Ronald Acuna Jr, he hit 20 homers to beat Acuna's 19 homers.  In the finals against fellow rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Guerrero hit 22 homers in the last round and didn't show any signs of fatigue after a long battle and swing off with Dodgers CF Joc Pederson. Alonso wasn't fazed and got on a roll and hit 23 homers in four minutes and didn't even need 30 extra seconds. He won the grand prize of one million dollars and will donate 10  % of his earning to charity. Alonso made nearly double his 2019 salary after winning the derby, since he makes $555,000 this year. He became the second Met to win the Home Run Derby after RF Darryl Strawberry won it in 1986.  It was a fun and special night to watch Alonso and many other young sluggers battle it out and another great moment for him and Met fans in what has been a special rookie season. Alonso will be playing in the All-Star game tomorrow night alongside teammates Jeff McNeil and Jacob deGrom.

The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-3 to lose two of three games in the series and dropped their record to 40-50. RHP Zack Wheeler had a difficult first inning allowing four runs due to his fastball having decreased velocity than in his previous starts.Wheeler gave up a RBI double to 1B Rhys Hoskins and then catcher J.T. Realmuto followed with a two-run double. LF Jay Bruce came up next and hit an RBI single. Wheeler settled down after that with scoreless innings in the top of the second, third, fourth and fifth inning. He went into a nice groove and one point retired 10 hitters in a row. Wheeler came back out for the top of the sixth inning after throwing 93 pitches and walked the lead-off hitter and then gave up a two-run homer to Bruce and was then taken out. His final line was 5 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and threw a scoreless top of the sixth inning. RHP Wilmer Font followed and threw a scoreless top of the seventh inning. Font stayed in for the top of the eighth and gave up a solo homer to Bruce, his second of the game and a single to 2B Cesar Hernandez, but retired the next three hitters he faced. He gave up a solo homer to Hoskins in the top of the ninth.

The offense was held scoreless against Phillies ace starter RHP Aaron Nola for the first five innings until the bottom of the sixth. RF All-Star Jeff McNeil reached on an error and 1B Pete Alonso followed with a two-run homer. It was Alonso's 30th homer of the year and the second player in team history to have 30 homers before the All-Star break. The bats went quiet after that until the bottom of the ninth inning pinch-hitter Adeiny Hechavarria hit a solo homer.

The Mets are off this week for the All-Star break and return to action on Friday, July 12th at the Miami Marlins at 7:10 p.m. RHP Jacob deGrom, IF/OF Jeff McNeil and 1B Pete Alonso will be representing the team for the National League in the All-Star game. Alonso will also be participating in the Home Run Derby tomorrow night.

Catcher Tomas Nido came through with a bases clearing double in the bottom of the fifth inning.

RHP Noah Syndergarrd allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings. He gave up three walks and had three strikeouts. Syndegarrd picked up his sixth win. LHP Justin Wilson followed with two outs in the top of the sixth. The New York Mets lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2 tonight for their second consecutive loss and dropped their record to 39-49. RHP Jacob deGrom had dominant stuff allowing two runs on three hits in seven innings with three walks and ten strikeouts. deGrom left the game with a no-decison. He has a 2.15 ERA in his last 46 starts and the team's record is 16-30 in those starts. RHP Seth Lugo followed in the top of the eighth and threw a scoreless inning. RHP Edwin Diaz came on in the top of the ninth inning and gave up a lead-off double to catcher J.T. Realmuto and then an RBI single to RF Jay Bruce. Diaz wound up giving up four runs and was taken out with runners on first and third. RHP Jeurys Familia came in next and gave up two hits and allowed both inherited runners to score. LHP Luis Avilan had to come to get the last out in the top of the ninth inning.

The offense was held scoreless for the first third innings until the bottom of the fourth after 1B Pete Alonso hit a solo homer, his 29th of the year. In the bottom of the fifth inning, RF Jeff McNeil singled with two outs and Alonso followed with a double to score McNeil. Pete now has 52 extra base hits on the year.

The New York Mets lost to the New York Yankees 5-1 tonight to snap their two-game winning streak and dropped their record to 39-48. LHP Jason Vargas got into immediate trouble in the top of the first inning after he gave up a lead-off double to 1B D.J. LeMahieu and another double to RF Aaron Judge, which brought in LeMahieu. Vargas gave up another run with two outs on an RBI single by 2B Gleyber Torres. He settled down with scoreless innings in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings. In the top of the sixth inning Vargas gave up a solo homer to SS Didi Gregorous, and then was taken out. His final line was 5.1 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and six strikeouts. RHP Wilmer Font came in next and was greeted rudely after he gave up a solo homer to 3B Gio Urshela. Font stayed in for the top of the seventh inning and gave up a double to LeMahieu and after retiring RF Aaron Judge and catcher Gary Sanchez, he allowed an RBI single to Torres. LHP Steven Matz had to come in to make his relief debut and retired Gregarious to end the inning. RHP Robert Gsellman threw a scoreless top of the eighth inning. RHP Jeurys Familia made his first appearance since coming off the IL in the top of the ninth and threw a scoreless inning.

RF Jeff McNeil got the offense on the board early with a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. After that the bats went quiet and were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.

The New York Mets defeated the New York Yankees 4-2 tonight for their second consecutive win and improved their record to 39-47. The offense was held scoreless for the first five innings after wasting several scoring opportunities, but finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning after LF J.D. Davis hit a solo homer. In the bottom of the eighth, 1B Pete Alonso led off and got on base after 3B D.J. LeMahieu made a throwing error. J.D. Davis followed with a RBI double to score Alonso to tie it it up. 2B Robinson Cano was walked intentionally and catcher Wilson Ramos hit a single to load the bases. RF Michael Conforto came through after a difficult night at the plate with a two-run double.

RHP Zack Wheeler started out well with two strikeouts in the top of the first inning, but ran into trouble in the top of the second inning. Wheeler gave up back-to-back singles to SS Didi Gregarious and 1B Edwin Encarnacion and then an RBI single to 2B Glyeber Torres. LF Brett Gardner grounded into a force-out, but LHP James Paxton bunted a run home after Wheeler and Ramos both went for the ball and neither one covered home. He settled down after that with 1-2-3 innings in the top of the third and fourth innings. Wheeler worked around a single by Gardner in the top of the fifth and a double by CF Aaron Hicks in the top of the sixth and didn't allow any runs. He stayed in for one batter in the top of the sixth and struck out Torres and was then taken out. His final line was 6.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, one walk and eight strikeouts. LHP Justin Wilson came in next for the first time since April after returning from the IL today and retired the only two batters he faced. RHP Seth Lugo followed with a 1-2-3 top of the eighth inning and picked up his fourth win. RHP Edwin came on in the top of the ninth to close it out and gave up an infield hit to SS Didi Gregarious to lead off the ninth inning, but came back to strike out Encarnacion and got Torres to fly out to center. Gregarious stole second, but Diaz struck out Gardner to end the game and he picked up his 19th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night against the Yankees at 7:10 p.m.

Mets Activate Jeurys Familia, Luis Avilan, and Justin Wilson off Injured List

The New York Mets announced today that they have activated relievers LHP Justin Wilson, LHP Luis Avilan and RHP Jeurys Familia off of the injured list and infielder Luis Guillorme has been promoted from Triple-A Syracuse. Relievers RHP Chris Flexen, RHP Brooks Pounders and RHP Chris Mazza have all been sent down to Triple-A Syracuse as corresponding roster moves. Familia was placed on the IL earlier this year on June 18th and has had a difficult year with a 7.81 ERA. Avilan has been on the IL since May 4th with left elbow soreness.  He has a 9.28 ERA in 10.2 innings. Wilson has been on the IL twice this year with elbow soreness. He has a 4.82 ERA in 9.1 innings.
