Mets Sweep Red Sox 8-3 Behind Winker and Bullpen

The New York Mets beat the Boston Red Sox 8-3 tonight at Citi Field for their seventh consecutive win and improved their record to 76-64.

The Met offense got off to a fast start in the bottom of the first after SS Francisco Lindor led off with a single and then LF Brandon Nimmo followed with a walk.

3B Mark Vientos then singled to load the bases and two batters later, DH Jesse Winker continued his clutch hitting with a grand slam.

The offense did not do much for the next six innings, but then came through in the bottom of the eighth with much needed insurance runs.

Nimmo led off with another walk and Vientos followed with another single.

Two batters later, Winker walked to load the bases and then RF Tyrone Taylor drove in a run with a walk.

2B Jeff McNeil then drew another based loaded walk and catcher Francisco Alvarez drew a based a loaded walk of his own.

CF Harrison Bader followed by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly.

RHP Tylor Megill started out well with two scoreless innings and then ran into trouble in the top of the third after he gave up a RBI double to CF Jarren Duran and then a sacrifice fly to 3B Rafael Devers.

Megill allowed a sacrifice fly to RF Wilyer Abreu but did not allow any more runs in the inning.

Megill had a scoreless top of the fourth and was taken out after the inning.

His final line was four innings, five hits, three runs, one walk and three strikeouts.

LHP Alex Young followed with a scoreless top of the fifth with an inning ending double play.

RHP Huascar Brazoban came in next and threw 1.1 scoreless innings and was able to get a double play to end the inning.

LHP Danny Young appeared next and got another double play to end the inning and picked up his third win of the season.

RHP Phil Maton came on in the top of the eighth with two outs and two runners out and picked up the biggest out of the game after DH Mastaka Yoshida hit a soft lineout to Lindor to end the inning.

RHP Edwin Diaz closed it out with a scoreless top of the ninth.

The Mets are off tomorrow and return back to action on Friday, September 6 at home against the Cincinnati Reds at 7:10 p.m.
