Meat Beat Blue Jays 3-2 With Eighth Inning Rally

The New York Mets beat the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 tonight at the Rogers Centre and improved their record to 79-65.

The Met offense was held scoreless for the three innings until the top of the fourth after 1B Pete Alonso walked with one out, 2B Jose Iglesias followed with a single and then 3B J.D. Martinez drove in Alonso with a RBI single.

The offense did not do much for the next three innings until the top of the eighth after pinch-hitter Jesse Winker led off with a walk and then catcher Francisco Alvarez followed by reaching on an infield hit and pinch-runner Tyrone Taylor reached third on an error.

SS Francisco Lindor then walked to load the bases and Taylor scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Alvarez then scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball.

RHP Tylor Megill had an outstanding start with six scoreless innings.

Megill gave up one hit with two walks and nine strikeouts to lower his ERA to 4.48.

LHP Danny Young came in next in the bottom of the seventh and gave up a hit and walk with one out and was then taken out.

RHP Jose Butto followed and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Ernie Clement to load the bases and then hit SS Leo Jimenez which tied the game.

Butto then gave up a sacrifice fly to RF George Springer, but was able to limit the damage and keep it a 2-1 deficit.

Ryen Stanek came on in the bottom of the eighth and had a dominating inning striking out the side to pick up his seventh win.

RHP Edwin Diaz appeared in the bottom of the ninth and retired his first two hitters and after allowing an infield hit to Clement, he came back to retire Jimenez on a deep fly to right to pick up his 17th save.

The Mets next game is tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 10 at the Blue Jays at 7:07 p.m.
